His life goes through many ups and downs until, at 21, he is in debt, but he is helped out by regular financial gifts from an unknown benefactor, who is evetually revealed as being the convict, now made good. The story also tells of Pip's unsuccesful love for Estella.
Hard Times
Charles Dickens
Hard Times was based on the economic struggles of the time, 1854. The novel is unusual for Dickens as it was not set in or around London, but instead is set in the fictitious Victorian industrial Coketown, a generic Northern English mill-town. It also challenges a prevailing idea of the time, Utilitarianism, which in a sense postulated that the ends justified the means.
Little Dorrit

This comic novel follows the life of Nicholas Nickleby as he becomes an assistant master at Dotheboys Hall, a school run by the evil Wackford Squeers.
