Attractive costume suitable for the young nanny or governess. Can also be used for theatrical roles. Of course, the most famous nanny was Mary Poppins, who featured in the books by P. L. Travers. The story was set in pre-war London. Travers was born in Australia, but moved to England at the age of 25. The first of eight Poppins books were published in 1934. Amusingly, Disney attempted to get the rights to make the film of one of the books, but Travers turned him down for many years, with the film coming out in 1964. Some Sherlock Holmes stories, which were Victorian, featured governesses, usually in the form of a victim of skulduggery.
